Insulation Batts
Definition
Insulation batts are pre-cut rectangular sections of glasswool or polyester insulation material installed between ceiling joists or rafters to reduce heat transfer through the roof, improving energy efficiency and comfort.
Understanding Insulation Batts
Ceiling insulation is one of the most effective ways to improve the thermal performance of a home, as up to 35% of heat loss in winter (and heat gain in summer) occurs through an uninsulated roof. Insulation batts work by trapping still air within their fibrous structure, which dramatically slows the conduction and convection of heat. The thermal performance of insulation is measured using an R-value — the higher the R-value, the greater the resistance to heat flow. The National Construction Code (NCC) specifies minimum R-values for different climate zones across Australia. Gippsland falls within NCC Climate Zone 7 (alpine/cold) in elevated areas and Climate Zone 6 (mild/cool temperate) in lower-lying regions. The minimum recommended ceiling insulation R-value for these zones ranges from R4.0 to R6.0, though higher R-values deliver greater energy savings. Common materials include glasswool (brands such as Fletcher Pink Batts and Knauf Earthwool) and polyester (brands such as Autex GreenStuf), available in thicknesses from 100mm to 275mm. During a roof replacement, it is an ideal time to upgrade or install ceiling insulation, as the roof space is fully accessible with the old covering removed. Town & Country Roofing can coordinate insulation installation as part of a roof replacement project, ensuring batts are correctly fitted without compression or gaps that would reduce their thermal performance.
