Roof Anchor
Definition
A roof anchor is a permanent fall-protection anchor point installed on the roof structure, providing a secure attachment for safety harnesses and lanyards during any future maintenance, inspection, or repair work on the roof.
Understanding Roof Anchor
Roof anchors are a critical component of a safe working-at-heights system. Under Victorian occupational health and safety regulations, any person working on a roof at a height of two metres or more must have appropriate fall-protection measures in place. Permanent roof anchors provide a convenient, reliable attachment point that is available for all future roof access, eliminating the need for temporary anchor systems each time maintenance is required. Roof anchors are typically stainless-steel posts or plates that are fixed through the roof covering into the structural frame (rafters or trusses) with heavy-duty bolts. Each anchor is rated to withstand a fall-arrest load of at least 15kN (approximately 1,500kg) and must comply with AS/NZS 1891.4. The roof penetration around the anchor is sealed with a purpose-designed flashing plate and sealant to prevent leaks. Anchors are positioned to provide coverage across the roof area, with the spacing determined by the lanyard length and the roof layout. In Gippsland, Town & Country Roofing can install certified roof anchor systems as part of a new roof installation or as a retrofit to existing roofs. This is particularly valuable for commercial and industrial buildings where regular roof maintenance is required, and for residential properties where ongoing gutter cleaning, antenna maintenance, or roof inspections necessitate safe roof access.
