Re-pointing & Re-bedding Services
Ridge caps sit along the peaks and hips of your roof and are held in place by a bed of mortar (bedding) sealed with a flexible compound (pointing). Over time, the original sand-and-cement bedding cracks, crumbles and lifts, allowing water to penetrate beneath the ridge caps and into your roof cavity. Re-bedding involves removing the old mortar and laying a fresh bed of flexible polymer-modified mortar, while re-pointing replaces the top seal with a modern flexible pointing compound that moves with the roof rather than cracking. This is one of the most important maintenance tasks for any tiled roof.

Benefits
Prevent Roof Leaks
Cracked bedding and pointing are one of the most common causes of roof leaks. Re-bedding and re-pointing seals these vulnerable areas.
Flexible, Long-Lasting Seal
Modern flexible pointing compound moves with thermal expansion and contraction rather than cracking like old cement pointing.
Secure Ridge Caps
Loose ridge caps can lift in high winds, exposing your roof cavity to rain. Fresh bedding locks them securely in place.
Our Process
Roof Inspection
We inspect every ridge and hip cap to assess the condition of the existing bedding and pointing and determine the scope of work.
Remove Old Bedding
Cracked, loose and deteriorated bedding mortar is carefully removed from beneath each ridge cap without disturbing the surrounding tiles.
Re-bed Ridge Caps
A fresh bed of flexible polymer-modified mortar is applied and each ridge cap is pressed into position and aligned.
Re-point with Flexible Compound
Flexible pointing compound is applied along the edges of each ridge cap to create a durable, waterproof seal that moves with the roof.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between re-bedding and re-pointing?
Re-bedding is the process of replacing the mortar bed that holds the ridge cap in place. Re-pointing is the application of a flexible compound along the edges of the ridge cap to seal the joint. Both are usually done together.
How often should ridge caps be re-pointed?
Traditional cement pointing typically needs replacing every 10 to 15 years. Modern flexible pointing compound can last 15 to 20 years. We recommend an inspection every 5 years to check the condition.
Can re-pointing be done without re-bedding?
If the bedding mortar is still solid and intact, re-pointing alone may be sufficient. However, if the bedding is cracked or crumbling, both re-bedding and re-pointing are necessary for a lasting result.
