Zincalume

Definition

Zincalume is an unpainted steel roofing product coated with a blend of 55% aluminium, 43.5% zinc, and 1.5% silicon, offering superior corrosion resistance in its natural metallic finish.

Understanding Zincalume

Manufactured by BlueScope Steel, Zincalume uses a patented alloy coating that combines the barrier protection of aluminium with the galvanic (sacrificial) protection of zinc. This dual-action system means that even when the coating is scratched or cut, the exposed steel is still protected from corrosion. Zincalume steel has a distinctive silvery-grey appearance and is often chosen where a natural metallic look is desired or where the roof will be hidden from street view. Zincalume is commonly used on sheds, carports, industrial buildings, and as a substrate beneath Colorbond paint finishes. In the Gippsland climate, Zincalume performs well in most environments, though BlueScope recommends additional precautions in severe coastal or industrial zones where airborne salt or chemical exposure may be elevated. It is important to note that Zincalume should not come into direct contact with treated timber, wet concrete, or certain metals, as this can cause accelerated corrosion through galvanic reaction. Proper installation with compatible fasteners and appropriate separation from incompatible materials is essential for achieving the expected 25-year-plus lifespan.
